As 2016 comes to a close, many are describing it as a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year. But was it really the worst year ever? While there were many tragic stories in 2016, there were also countless uplifting stories. For instance, team “worst year ever” could point to reports suggesting that 2016 will be the hottest year on record. Team “it wasn’t bad” could instead point to the nearly 200 nations who came together to sign the historic Paris Agreement.
With respect to the presidential election, perhaps the most memorable news of 2016 in the U.S. anyway, most would at least agree that it was a seemingly endless and bitterly fought campaign. As for the outcome—it was as polarizing as the election itself. But this wasn’t the first divisive election. The hard-fought 1800 presidential election between Adams and Jefferson was certainly no picnic.
In the sports world, some might say 2016 was the best year ever. LeBron James—Ohio’s native son—and his teammates made Cleveland a city of champions after 52 years of sports agony. And shortly after the 2016 Olympics provided a wealth of inspirational moments, Chicago Cubs fans finally experienced the sweet taste of victory after 108 long years. And who could forget the adorable young Lionel Messi fan who finally got to meet his idol?
