Trump Asks Why “Beleaguered” Sessions Isn’t Investigating Clinton

President Trump began the week with new comments regarding Attorney General Jeff Session. In an interview with the New York Times last week the President said that he never would have chosen Sessions for Attorney General if he had known that Sessions would recuse himself from the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. This morning, the President tweeted out “[s]o why aren’t the Committees and investigators, and of course our beleaguered A.G., looking into Crooked Hillarys [sic] crimes & Russia relations?” While President Trump appears to have questioned Attorney General Sessions’ actions more than once, Sessions said publicly that he has no intentions to resign saying he will stay on “as long as that is appropriate.”

The President’s tweet echoes a popular campaign refrain where he publicly wondered why the Justice Department was not investigating former Secretary of State and 2016 Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. During his time as head of the Justice Department, Attorney General Sessions has focused on attempting to address violence, gangs, and drugs, key pillars to the President’s focus on ending the “American carnage” all over the country.

Attorney General Sessions was not the only government official in President Trump’s crosshairs over the weekend as the President also criticized Republicans in Congress for not protecting their President tweeting “[i]t’s very sad that Republicans, even some that were carried over the line on my back do very little to protect their President.” The President’s comments also extend to California Representative Adam Schiff with the President tweeting “[s]leazy Adam Schiff, the totally biased Congressman looking into ‘Russia,’ spends all of his time on television pushing the Dem loss excuse!”

It remains to be seen what effect the President’s apparent criticisms of Attorney General Sessions, Republicans in Congress, and key investigators in the Russian meddling probe in Congress. If Attorney General Sessions were to resign it could affect False Claims Act enforcement because the Attorney General has publicly stated his support for the False Claims Act and tackling fraud.
