SEC Charges Mexico-Based Homebuilder in $3.3 Billion Accounting Fraud — The SEC today announced that Mexico-based homebuilding company Desarrolladora Homex S.A.B. de C.V. has agreed to settle charges that it reported fake sales of more than 100,000 homes to boost revenues in its financial statements during a three-year period. The SEC used satellite imagery to help uncover the accounting scheme and illustrate its allegation that Homex had not even broken ground on many of the homes for which it reported revenues. SEC

Sweden: Whistleblowing Law Now in Effect — Aimed at increasing protections for whistleblowers, the Swedish Whistleblowing Act requires employers to establish mechanisms allowing employees to report serious workplace breaches internally or through a trade union without fear of reprisal. Any form of retaliation against employees who report serious wrongdoing is outlawed, and employees have a new right to sue for damages if they believe they have been subject to illegal retaliation. Whistleblower Hotline sees increased use as Missourians report government wrongdoing — Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway says citizens are engaged in government and they’re contacting her office to share what they can to help government run better. “Government exists to serve its people, not the other way around. Missourians want a transparent government and public officials that are held accountable for their actions,” Auditor Galloway said. Summit Tribune
