Former Bechtel executive pleads guilty to kickback scheme — The former Principal Vice President of Bechtel Corporation and General Manager of the Power Generation Engineering and Services Company (PGESCo) pleaded guilty in connection with a $5.2 million kickback scheme intended to manipulate the competitive bidding process for state-run power contracts in Egypt.  DOJ

Medicaid lawsuit against school consultants — Lawsuit alleges that rather than helping school districts obtain reimbursement for legitimate costs incurred helping Medicaid-eligible students obtain necessary healthcare services, the defendants gamed the system and received millions of dollars in ‘consulting’ fees by causing the districts to file tens of millions of dollars in false claims.  Seattle Times

Rite Aid pays $2.99 million for kickback scheme — The settlement resolves allegations that, from 2008 to 2010, Rite Aid influenced the decisions of Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries to transfer their prescriptions to Rite Aid pharmacies by offering them gift cards in exchange for their business.  DOJ

Maryland whistleblower laws weak — Article on the way in which Maryland’s whistleblower laws are inadequate to protect employees who blow the whistle, noting that investigators found that employers had taken retaliatory steps against nearly 40 percent of whistleblowers in 2013.  Baltimore Sun

UW system considering whistleblower hotline — The University of Wisconsin System will consider today whether it will start its own fraud hotline where whistleblowers can report waste, fraud, and abuse by any of the 26 public campuses or their employees.  WTAQ
