Deutsche Bank withdraws from gold and silver benchmark price setting – The bank’s withdrawal follows intensified efforts by European regulators to investigate suspected manipulation in the precious metals markets.  Reuters

University of North Carolina suspends whistleblower’s research on literacy of big-money college athletes – The research was being conducted by Mary Willingham, the whistleblower who previously revealed the university was giving athletes academic credit for phantom classes.  Charlotte Observer

Banks conceal their mortgage litigation reserves – Most banks claim that disclosing the size of their litigation funds would undermine their ability to negotiate fair settlements, but keeping the information hidden makes it tough for investors and analysts to evaluate a bank’s health.   NYT

UN warns of serious danger from climate change – A draft report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change finds the situation has grown critical and the risk of severe economic disruption is rising to the point where another 15 years of failure to limit carbon emissions could make the problem virtually impossible to solve.  NYT

Snowboarders sue Alta over snowboard ban – The group claims the ski resort’s ban violates their constitutional rights because it is based on nothing but an “animus … towards the type of people they believe to be snowboarders.”  Salt Lake Tribune
