US settles kickback allegations with Georgia Hospital — Health Management Associates and Clearview Regional Medical Center agree to pay $595,155 to settle allegations that from 2008 to 2009 the hospital paid kickbacks to an obstetric clinic that served primarily undocumented Hispanic women, in return for referral of those patients for labor and delivery at the hospital.   DOJ

 Abacus bank acquitted of all charges in N.Y. mortgage fraud trial — Abacus Federal Savings Bank, which caters to the Chinese-American community in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, was found not guilty on Thursday of all charges related to the sale of allegedly fraudulent mortgages to Fannie Mae.   New York Times

‘Vortex of fraud’ lands bank scam artist 12 years in prison — A Kentucky businessman was sentenced on Thursday to 12 years in federal prison for a series of massive frauds, including a $53 million tax scheme, the bribing of bank officials, and the defrauding of bank and insurance regulators.  Business Insider

President of NJ financial services firm sentenced to 10 years in prison — The president of investment and financial services firm, Carr Miller Capital LLC, was sentenced today to 120 months in prison for evading taxes and defrauding dozens of investors in several states to support his lavish lifestyle.  DOJ

FIFA bribed Ireland FA not to protest handball — FIFA said it wrote off a $5 million Euro “loan” to Ireland in compensation for missing the 2010 World Cup after Thierry Henry’s controversial handball set up the winning French goal.  The Guardian

Romania premier in corruption probe — Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta urged to resign after prosecutors on Friday said he is being investigated for forgery, money laundering and complicity in tax fraud.  Bloomberg
