SEC Announces Whistleblower Award of More Than $1.7 Million   The SEC announced a whistleblower award of more than $1.7 million to a company insider who provided the agency with critical information to help stop a fraud that would have otherwise been difficult to detect.  Millions of dollars were returned to harmed investors as a result of the SEC’s ensuing investigation and enforcement action. ”When whistleblowers tip the SEC, it not only can bring wrongdoers to justice but also relief to investors,” said Jane Norberg, Chief of the SEC’s Office of the Whistleblower. ” This whistleblower’s valuable information enabled us to stop further investor harm and ultimately return money to victims.”SEC

Lawyers depict Martin Shkreli as chronic liar or troubled genius as fraud trial nears end — The criminal fraud trial of so-called “Pharmacy Bro” Martin Shkreli neared a close yesterday amid sharply clashing legal arguments, conflicting claims about lies and even a sexual innuendo.  A federal prosecutor argued evidence showed the New York pharmaceutical entrepreneur was a habitual liar who defrauded healthcare investors in a Ponzi-like scheme. But a defense attorney called the claims of prosecution witnesses who testified they were misled by Shkreli “rich people B.S.” USA Today

Pakistani court disqualifies PM on corruption allegations — A five-judge panel of Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Friday disqualified thrice-elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from holding office over allegations of corruption and ordered criminal charges be filed against him and his family. The court panel in a unanimous decision said Sharif was disqualified for not remaining “truthful and honest” after considering evidence against him. It also ruled that Sharif could no longer serve as a member of the National Assembly, a powerful lower house of the parliament. Washington Post
