New study suggests physicians and device makers are too close – Researchers explored the role of sales technicians in operating rooms, finding surgeons often couldn’t use complex devices without the technical expertise that sales technicians provided. The close ties may increase hospital costs. “Even sales representatives told researchers that they felt uncomfortable when their companies pushed them to sell newer, more expensive products even though existing products had more extensive efficacy data.”  Modern Healthcare

UK’s Serious Fraud Office increases investigations – Reflecting the country’s renewed interest in stamping out fraud and corruption from financial centers and businesses, the SFO is conducting more compulsory interviews. The SFO’s caseload includes 60 “live” investigations.  WSJ

SFO alleges logistics company conspired to bribe Angolan state oil company – F.H. Bertling Ltd and seven individuals have been charged with making corrupt payments. FT

Key Energy settles SEC investigation – The company agreed to disgorge $10 million to settle charges it paid bribes to a contractor working for the Mexican state-owned oil company. The bribes, a violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, were allegedly paid to the contractor to induce him to provide advice, assistance and inside information for use during negotiations with Pemex. CFTC announces results of two enforcement actions – International Monetary Metals was ordered  to pay over $9.8 million for engaging in illegal, off-exchange transactions in precious metals (including gold and silver) with retail customers. CFTC  In a separate action a South Carolina couple will pay over $10 million, and the husband will serve a prison sentence, for  misappropriating pool participant funds and failing to register as commodity pool operators. CFTC

UN says it will help Iraq tackle rampant corruption –  The U.N. Development Program will recruit international investigators to mentor and train Iraqi government auditors tasked with corruption investigations. The country ranks 161st out of 168 nations in Transparency International’s Corruption Index. Daily Mail
