Constantine Cannon Attorneys Speak on Whistleblowing at Investigative Film Festival

Posted  October 16, 2019

Mary Inman and Ed Baker spoke at the fifth annual Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival & Symposium last week in Washington D.C.  The DX Film Festival is a project of 100Reporters, a non-profit investigative news organization that works with journalists in the United States and around the world to bring investigative reporting to global audiences.

Films screened at the festival included Academy award-winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple’s much anticipated Desert One, on the failed mission to rescue the American hostages held in Iran for the last 444 days of Jimmy Carter’s presidency.  After the screening, some of the former hostages and their would-be rescuers, members of the Army’s Delta Force unit, as well as several diplomats, spoke about the disastrous mission.  The closing night film was Feras Fayyad’s remarkable new documentary, The Cave, a National Geographic film that documents the experiences of the beleaguered medical staff helping civilians in an underground hospital in Syria during bombardment by Syrian and Russian forces.

The DX Film Festival also included a symposium on various topics.  Mary Inman participated in a panel called “The Big Chill” that focused on the rising threat to whistleblowers around the world.  The panel was moderated by journalist Tom Mueller, author of Crisis of Conscience:  Whistleblowing In an Age of Fraud, and also featured Erika Cheung, a Theranos whistleblower; Sally Hayden, an Irish journalist who exposed bribery by UN officials in the Sudan; Delphine Halgand, journalist and founder of The Signals Network, which assists whistleblowers; and Jeffrey Sterling, a former CIA officer imprisoned for violations of the Espionage Act who attempted to bring to light civil rights discrimination by the CIA.  Ed Baker participated in a Pro Bono Legal Clinic during the festival, advising journalists on how they can safely work with and report on whistleblowers.

Constantine Cannon was a sponsor of the festival, which drew investigative journalists, documentary filmmakers, and whistleblower advocates from around the world. Constantine Cannon’s whistleblower practice group has decades of experience representing whistleblowers and assisting them to expose wrongdoing under various whistleblower reward programs.
