From Succession to The Dropout: Top 10 TV Shows with Whistleblower Themes

Posted  November 25, 2025

By the Constantine Cannon Whistleblower Team

It’s no surprise that our team enjoys TV shows that spotlight whistleblowers and the complex moral and personal choices they face. We’ve rounded up ten of our favorites that explore fraud, secrecy, and power through dramatized true stories, investigative documentaries, and fictional plots. Some feature traditional whistleblowers, while others highlight characters who challenge wrongdoing in unconventional ways.

There have been countless TV shows shaped by the whistleblower spirit. These shows examine what happens when whistleblowers risk everything to expose corruption and injustice.

How Are Whistleblowers Portrayed on TV?

TV often casts whistleblowers as heroic. These stories explore the challenges faced by whistleblowers such as isolation, distress, retaliation, or media involvement. They also show how individuals use their voices to force change even when the path forward is difficult.

By centering stories around whistleblowers or fraudsters, our list of TV picks invites viewers to question authority and confront harsh realities. And perhaps some will inspire you to blow the whistle, too.

Of course, it was challenging to select just ten TV shows. Let us know if you would add any to our roundup below listed in no particular order.

The Dropout

This TV miniseries traces the rise and fall of biotechnology company Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes. Holmes built Theranos on the promise that it would revolutionize blood testing by using a single drop. The show follows her as she pushes that promise forward long after it is clear the technology does not work, deceiving investors, partners, and the public along the way. It also highlights the role of whistleblowers, including former Constantine Cannon client Tyler Shultz, whose decision to speak out helped expose the truth.

Our team recently attended The Anti-Fraud Coalition’s 25th Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. where Tyler Shultz spoke about his experience in blowing the whistle.[1] In a recent post, we shared what future whistleblowers can learn from him.

Ozark

Ozark weaves whistleblower themes into its dark crime narrative. Characters confront the consequences of participating in, exposing, or failing to report major criminal operations. The show centers on financial planner Marty Byrde who relocated his family to the Ozarks after a money laundering deal for a powerful drug cartel went sour. Story arcs revolve around individuals who uncover financial misconduct, government corruption, or illicit schemes and how the characters must decide whether to collaborate with authorities. Those who attempt to reveal the truth face dangers. Throughout the seasons, viewers get a front-row seat into the moral complexity and personal peril that comes with challenging powerful individuals and organizations.[2]

Whistleblower

For two seasons, Whistleblower examined real stories where individuals put “everything on the line” to blow the whistle on corporate corruption, fraud, or misconduct. [3] Each episode covers a different whistleblower’s story, and they are featured in the episodes. Tune in for true stories about fraud involving military contracts, kickbacks, healthcare fraud, and other schemes that defrauded the government.[4]

Dirty Money

Dirty Money is a hard-hitting docuseries that spotlights real-world corporate fraud, misconduct, and financial deception through the voices of whistleblowers and investigative journalists digging for the truth. Each episode studies a different scenario, showing how insiders, investigators, or affected individuals confront companies and take chances when challenging such structures. The series emphasizes the courage it takes to speak out and the systemic failures that allow wrongdoing to persist.[5]

Mr. Robot

Mr. Robot explores whistleblowing through its fictional protagonist, Elliot Alderson, a cybersecurity engineer who becomes a vigilante hacker, making strides toward taking down corporations he deems corrupt.[6] The show follows Elliot’s recruitment by an underground group of hackers, activities that can be related to digital whistleblowing, and overall disillusionment with powerful institutions which he sees as exploiting everyday people. Throughout the course of the show, Elliot exhibits signs of the psychological toll that challenging authority takes and the occasional consequences of blowing the whistle.

The Morning Show

The Morning Show embraces whistleblower topics through its portrayal of standing up against workplace misconduct and the courage it takes to blow the whistle. As the story unfolds, characters like Bradley Jackson, a new and outspoken co-anchor, become vehicles for truth telling and push back against the network’s efforts to conceal wrongdoing or spin narratives. The show delves into the moral implications of whistleblowing, particularly within toxic systems that attempt to protect abusers and silence victims.[7]

WeCrashed

WeCrashed dramatizes the rise and fall of the startup WeWork and the questionable practices of its co-founder Adam Neumann.

The series focuses on Neumann’s charismatic leadership, the company’s meteoric yet unstable growth trajectory, and features dramatized portrayals of employees, investors, and journalists who began speaking up against his decisions as well as the sustainability of the business model and work culture.[8]

Their willingness to speak out and put their professional and personal lives on the line drove some of the show’s narrative, underscoring how unchecked ambition and lack of accountability can lead to corporate collapse.

Scandal

In this high-stakes political drama, secrets, cover-ups, and ethical dilemmas define Washington, D.C.’s inner workings. Throughout the series, characters who attempt to reveal government misconduct or illegal operations become pivotal in unraveling major plot lines. Their actions often expose the moral rot behind political institutions, triggering crises that ripple through the administration and main character Olivia Pope’s crisis management firm.[9] By dramatizing the intense risks and sacrifices involved in speaking up, Scandal uses whistleblower story arcs to examine loyalty and truth.

Succession

Succession was reportedly loosely inspired by the Murdoch family or other media family conglomerates, and while it isn’t primarily a whistleblower show, whistleblowing (or the possibility of spilling secrets) drives the story forward and showcases the fictional Roy family’s power dynamics. Various characters toy with exposing the Roy family’s corporate misconduct, ranging from cover-ups to criminal negligence, using knowledge as leverage to battle for control of the family business, Waystar Royco.[10] These moments demonstrate how truth can be weaponized in a corrupt system. Here, whistleblowing is used as a technique to survive internal warfare.

Inventing Anna

While Inventing Anna isn’t a traditional whistleblower story, it shares related themes by exposing fraud through the lens of investigative journalism. The series portrays journalist Vivian Kent as she digs into the life of Anna Sorokin, a con artist who posed as a wealthy German heiress to infiltrate New York’s social elite.[11] Through Kent’s relentless pursuit of the truth, the series showcases the media’s role in uncovering deception and holding powerful individuals and institutions accountable. Inventing Anna is on our list since it demonstrates how one person’s actions and another’s willpower to find the facts can reveal deeper truths about society and the vulnerabilities of financial and social systems.
