DOJ announced the largest healthcare fraud enforcement action that resulted in 601 charged defendants in 58 federal districts. The 601 charged defendants including 165 doctors, nurses, and other licensed medical professionals. The allegations involve schemes totaling more than an estimated $2 billion in false billings. The cases involved frauds such as providing medically unnecessary treatments, paying kickbacks, submitting fraudulent bills to Medicare, and unlawful distribution of opioids. The cases are being prosecuted nationwide by various U.S. Attorneys’ offices and various state MFCUs. DOJ
