Question of the Week -- Do Leakers Deserve Whistleblower Protections?
By the C|C Whistleblower Lawyer Team
There’s a lot of different ways to characterize someone who leaks secret information. Depending on the intent (and identity) of the leaker, we tend to treat them differently. In some cases, such as Chelsea Manning or Edward Snowden, a person may feel compelled to break the law to unearth damning information about the government. Others, such President Trump, are apparently motivated by a desire to brag about their “great intel.” Still others may feel compelled to report facts to spur government investigations into potential wrongdoing.
Not all observers think leaking information is a good thing. Some, such as the President, go so far as to condemn leaks as dangerous or criminal. Others stand up for leakers as noble patriots. And depending on your perspective, you probably have very different views about whether leakers should have the same rights as whistleblowers. At least some in Congress are trying to ensure their protection. Others are call for their prosecution.
What do you think? Do leakers deserve whistleblower protections?
