Whistleblower: Michael Flynn told Russia-related contacts that sanctions would be "ripped up"

According to a new account by an anonymous whistleblower, Flynn texted a former business partner during Trump’s inauguration ceremony to say that a US-Russian collaboration to build nuclear reactors in the Middle East was “good to go.” The former business partner was Alex Copson, the managing director of ACU Strategic Partners, who Flynn directed to “put things in place” in preparation for the plan.

The Whistleblower also reported that Flynn told Copson that any US sanctions that might block the project would be “ripped up.”

The whistleblower first approached the House Oversight Committee in June, after the publication of initial media reports describing the deal. This week, Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD) wrote a letter to the committee chairman describing the whistleblower’s allegations. Cummings says that his release of the information was delayed by a request of Robert Mueller, who asked that the committee wait until the Mueller team “completed certain investigative steps,” a directive that was lifted last Friday.

Flynn served as an adviser for ACU for about a year, according to his disclosure form. He later served as an adviser of IronBridge group, which was also involved in the construction of nuclear power plants in the Middle East. According to several sources, Russian firms that might have been involved in the deal include an arms exporter currently under US sanctions, an engineering firm under US sanctions, and Russia’s state owned nuclear company.
