American sprinting champion Tyson Gay and other Olympians fail drug test – Adding to the growing list of fallen sports heroes, three sprinting superstars including Gay, and Jamaica’s Asafa Powell and Sheron Simpson all tested positive for banned substances.  Sports Illustrated

Obama’s remarks on military sexual assaults makes prosecutions more difficult – The President was trying to send a strong message when he recently declared that soldiers committing sexual assault should be prosecuted, court-martialed and dishonorably discharged.  But those words are now being used successfully by defense lawyers to free their clients, claiming Obama has tainted the proceedings.  NYT

Government spends millions on lavish military facility in Afghanistan with no plans to use it – In what many are calling a classic case of Pentagon mismanagement, the U.S. just completed a state-of-the-art operations center in southwestern Afghanistan with all the tools to wage a modern war but no troops or personnel to occupy it.  Washington Post

Former U.S. official gets 19 years for record bribery scheme — Kerry Kahn, a former manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was ordered to pay $32.5 million and spend 19 years in jail for orchestrating a bribery and kickback scheme that authorities called historic in scope and involved conduct described as “shocking, vicious and cruel.”  NPR

US retailers announce plan to improve factory safety in Bangladesh – Following their European counterparts, a group of 17 major U.S. retailers have agreed to work towards improving conditions at the clothing factories they use in Bangladesh, but their plan is being criticized for not going far enough.  NYT

Poll shows most Americans view Snowden as whistleblower not traitor – A recent poll by Quinnipiac University found that 55% of Americans view former NSA contractor Edward Snowden as a whistleblower while just 34% see him as a traitor.  US News
