Study shows tie between prescriptions and doctor payments – Despite longstanding claims by physicians that payments or benefits from drug companies do not influence their decisions on prescribing drugs, a recent study suggests that benefits as small as a free lunch can radically alter how doctors prescribe pharmaceuticals.  The Atlantic

Respironics Inc. settles False Claims Act lawsuit for $34.8 million – The company agreed to make the payment to resolve allegations that it provided free call center services to medical equipment suppliers that purchased its masks for patients with sleep apnea.  Corporate Crime Reporter

Inspector General opens probe of DOD rocket launch contract – The investigation comes on the heels of a statement by an executive of the United Launch Alliance (ULA is a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin that holds the contract with the Pentagon) that the DOD had “bent over backwards” to help ULA win the contract.  Washington Post

Florida businessman guilty of violating Foreign Corrupt Practices Act – Abraham Jose Shiera Bastidas, the owner of several energy companies, pleaded guilty to charges that he conspired to obtain Venezuelan energy contracts in exchange for bribes.  DOJ

Cardiovascular Systems Inc. settles kickback allegations – The $8 million settlement releases the company from a False Claims Act lawsuit brought by a whistleblower alleging the company provided kickbacks to physicians to induce them to prescribe its products.  Twin City Business Magazine
