U.S. Intervenes in East Texas False Claims Act Lawsuit – The United States filed a complaint in partial intervention against East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System, Inc. and others alleging violations of the False Claims Act and the Anti-Kickback Statute. The complaint alleges the paying of kickbacks by the health system to gain access to Medicare and Medicaid funds. DOJ

Retrial Set to Begin in Dewey & LeBoeuf Securities Fraud Case – A retrial of two key executives at former law firm Dewey & LeBoeuf will begin this week. Stephen DiCarmine and Joel Sanders face a second trial on accusations that they were the architects of a scheme to defraud lenders and creditors of the now defunct law firm. Both face up to four years in prison on a criminal charge of securities fraud. NYT

Walgreens to Pay $50 Million to Settle Claims That it Violated Anti-Kickback Law – Walgreens agreed to pay $50 million to settle allegations that it illegally gave discounts to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries to encourage them to fill their prescriptions at Walgreens. The government alleged that Walgreens enrolled hundreds of thousands of government beneficiaries into its Prescription Savings Club. Chicago Tribune.
