US and Illinois intervene in FCA case against youth counseling center—Laynie Foundation, and its owners, allegedly violated the FCA by billing for more mental health services than were provided, billing Medicaid for non-reimbursable services such as staff training, and not meeting state requirements regarding clinical supervision. This alleged fraud was brought to light by a whistleblower. USAO Northern District of Illinois
Colorado man settles FCA suit for $200K—Stephen Ackerman has settled allegations that he improperly accepted Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) by not accurately reporting his work activity to the SSA. Ackerman owned and operated a Marijuana retail business while telling the SSA that he was not working, and thus collecting SSDI. USAO Colorado
Canada eliminates “grease payment” exception under foreign bribery law—Canada has eliminated an exception to their foreign bribery law that allowed for bribes of foreign officials to set up routine transactions, such as the issuance of permits. A similar exception still exists under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The change is effective on October 31. Wall Street Journal
