Texas man pleads guilty to $50M in TRICARE fraud—Andrew Baumiller has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud TRICARE. Baumiller is the first of several accused individuals to plead guilty for a scheme involving kickbacks paid to physicians in exchange for those physicians’ referrals to a group of pharmacies. The kickbacks were disguised as grants for participating in a medical study about patient safety, a study which was never executed. USAO Northern District of Texas

Pennsylvania man arrested for over $250K of disaster relief fraud—Nicholas Ochs was arrested and is accused of defrauding several FEMA-backed efforts that participated in relief from Hurricane Sandy. Ochs applied for FEMA rental assistance on behalf of his mother after her home was badly damaged in the superstorm. When he applied for the funds, he also signed an attestation that the money would be returned if insurance benefits covered the same loss. Ochs then submitted fabricated documents to FEMA, “showing” a denial of insurance benefits. USAO New Jersey

South African president to face bribery charges—The country’s Supreme Court has ruled that the sitting president, Jacob Zuma, must face charges for corruption, fraud, racketeering, and money laundering. The charges, which related to a 1999 arms deal, were set aside eight years ago, enabling Zuma to become president. The charges center around Zuma, and other government officials, taking kickbacks from the purchase jets, boats, and other arms. Zuma has already survived eight votes of no-confidence. BBC
