Two Men Charged in Bribery Scheme Related to Korean Base Relocation — Former U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contracting officer Duane Nishiie and former Korean Ministry of Defense officer Seung-Ju Lee were indicted for participating in a scheme to direct over $400 million in U.S. government defense construction contracts to a Korea-based corporation in exchange for $3 million in bribes. Over a period of four years, the defendants allegedly solicited bribes from the Korean company in exchange for directing a series of contracts to the company. The contracts related to relocating and expanding a military installation in Korea called Camp Humphreys. DOJ
Miami May Sue Big Pharma Over Opioid Epidemic — Amid soaring costs stemming from the opioid crisis, Miami is considering filing a lawsuit that would allege pharmaceutical companies withheld “critical information about the drugs’ addictive qualities and other risks associated with prolonged use.” Meanwhile, Florida Governor Rick Scott called for $50 million in state funding to fight the epidemic. Tyson Poultry Pleads Guilty to Clean Water Act Violations —Tyson’s guilty plea stems from discharges of acidic feed supplement at its slaughter and processing facilities. “Ensuring agricultural operations dispose of their waste in a lawful way is critical to protecting the health of local communities and clean water,” said Larry Starfield, acting Assistant Administrator for EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance.
