Earlier this week, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced an award of more than $70,000 to a whistleblower "who significantly contributed to an ongoing CFTC investigation and led the CFTC to a successful settlement." The CFTC has announced its first whistleblower award to a foreign whistleblower. The award totals over $70K, but the investigation that resulted in the award is yet-to-be revealed. This is the second award made under the CFTC’s new whistleblower rules, after the largest award in CFTC history, paid on July 12, 2018. On May 31, the White House announced new tariffs on steel and aluminum entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. Steel from those countries and the European Union will be subject to a 25% tariff, and aluminum will be subject to a 10% tariff.
