Trump Lashes Out Against Intelligence Leaks

President Trump unleashed a twitter tirade this morning, condemning the nation’s intelligence agencies for “leaking” information about his Administration’s alleged dealings with Russia both before and after the presidential campaign. The tweet tempest arrived on the heels of the resignation of Michael Flynn as National Security Adviser.

The tweet storm began around 5:00 am, when Trump pronounced that the “real scandal here is that classified information is illegally given out by ‘intelligence’ like candy.” According to Trump, the “Russian connection non-sense is merely an attempt to cover-up the many mistakes made in Hillary Clinton’s losing campaign.”  Trump then blamed his favorite target—the “fake news media”—for propagating “conspiracy theories and blind hatred.”

Trump’s Russia gaslighting is nothing new. Since assuming power, he has consistently attempted to deflect attention from his Administration’s unprecedented contacts with Russia by accusing intelligence agencies and the F.B.I. of leaking sensitive information.  Indeed, some speculate that Flynn, who acknowledged that he misled the Vice President about his pre-election discussions with Russia’s U.S. ambassador, may have been sacrificed to protect other Administration officials—including Trump himself.
